Protocols: Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium)

Psychoactive

Description: Member of the chrysanthemum family. Used for thousands of years and described in ancient Greek literature.

Method of Action: Parthenolid prevents migraine by interfering with aggregation of platelets in blood. Has been shown to suppress 86% to 88% of prostaglandin productions (reducing severity of inflammation that accompanies migraine) but does not inhibit cyclooxygenase.

Indications and Usage: Migraine Headache (average 24% reduction); Menstrual pain; Cold Symptoms; Depression; Arthritic Pain.

Contraindications: Do not use this product if you are pregnant or lactating without first seeking advice from your physician. Pregnant or nursing mothers; those allergic to plants of the chrysanthemum family (chamomile, ragweed, or yarrow); children under two years of age. May alter bleeding time and should not be used concomitantly with warfarin sodium or other anticoagulants. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAILDs) may reduce effectiveness of feverfew.

Dosage and Administration: Standard dose 125 mg/day (250 mcg) of parthenolide. Used as a preventive, not an emergent treatment. Continue for two to three years.

Clinical Effect In: Four to twelve weeks.

Adverse Reactions: Allergic reactions. Liver and human peripheral blood mononuclear toxicity has been found for this product during in vitro testing. Known Interactive Effects: Tannin complex in this product may interfere with iron absorption and should be used with caution by patients being treated for iron deficiency.
